Types of contracts

Contracts & Agreements · Students & Scholars · Updated

When you're accepted for a project, you'll receive a contract through the platform. There are two main types:

Hourly contracts

The most common format. You're paid based on tracked hours at an agreed hourly rate. Hours are tracked via a time-tracking tool and paid monthly. Each contract has a weekly or monthly cap that can only be adjusted by the project team.

Deliverable-based contracts

You're paid upon completing specific work items — no time tracking required. Payment is processed after the deliverable is reviewed and approved. These are common for one-off assessments, training modules, or specific research tasks.

Limits

  • You can hold a maximum of 2 active contracts simultaneously.
  • Your total hours across all contracts should not exceed a reasonable weekly workload alongside your studies.
  • Paused, ended, or cancelled contracts don't count toward your active limit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from an hourly contract to a deliverable-based contract (or vice versa)?

Contract type is determined by the project, not the evaluator. If a project transitions from one type to another, you'll receive a new contract. You cannot unilaterally request a switch.

What happens if I exceed my weekly hour cap?

Hours logged beyond your cap are typically not approved for payment. If you anticipate needing more hours, discuss it with your project lead before working extra. Unapproved overtime will not be compensated.

My contract is paused. What does that mean?

A paused contract means the project is temporarily on hold. You cannot log hours or submit work during a pause. You'll be notified when the project resumes. Paused contracts do not count toward your 2-contract limit.

How does contract renewal work?

Contracts have defined end dates. If the project continues and your performance has been satisfactory, you may receive a renewal offer. Renewals are not automatic — they depend on project needs and your standing.

Can I hold contracts on two different projects at the same time?

Yes, as long as you don't exceed the 2 active contract maximum. Make sure your total weekly hours across both projects remain manageable.

What happens if a project ends unexpectedly?

You'll be notified and your contract will be ended or cancelled. You will be paid for all approved work completed up to that point. This does not affect your eligibility for other projects.

Can I negotiate the terms of my contract?

Contracts are standardised per project. Pay rates and hour caps are set by the project team and are generally not negotiable. However, you can decline an offer if the terms don't work for you.

Does a cancelled contract affect my reputation on the platform?

A project cancellation (initiated by the project team) does not negatively affect your profile. A contract ended due to performance or policy issues may be noted, but each new application is evaluated on its own merits.
